OpenShift Production Platform
Production OpenShift cluster implemented on VMware vCenter in a disconnected environment.
Environment & Context
Context
A production OpenShift environment was implemented on VMware vCenter within a disconnected environment.
Role
Architecture was provided by the designated Architect. My responsibility was the end-to-end implementation of the environment based on that design.
This involved VM creation, bastion-based SSH access, bootstrap sequencing, cluster node integration, and ensuring production readiness.
Architecture
Implementation
Virtual Machine Provisioning
Created the virtual machines required for the cluster.
Bastion Access
Established SSH access through the bastion environment.
Bootstrap
Executed the OpenShift bootstrap process.
Master Integration
Added the Master nodes to the cluster.
Worker Integration
Added the Worker nodes.
Production
Validated the resulting environment and brought the cluster into Production.
Challenge: Disconnected Environment
The project required implementation in an environment without normal external connectivity.
Resolution
Resolved through extensive technical documentation research, investigation, troubleshooting, and validation.
Outcome
Successfully brought the OpenShift environment into Production and established an operational 3-Master / 3-Worker cluster.
- →3 Master nodes
- →3 Worker nodes
- →VMware vCenter
- →Operational OpenShift cluster
Engineering Lessons
Production implementation requires translating architecture into an operational environment.
Infrastructure implementation involves more than provisioning resources; access, sequencing, validation, and integration matter.
Disconnected environments increase the importance of documentation, investigation, and validation.
Clear separation between architecture ownership and implementation ownership is important.
A production platform should be presented through evidence and operational responsibility rather than unsupported expertise claims.
